Welcome to the Yarmouth Skating
Club’s CanSkate program!
CanSkate is the only nationally recognized “learn
to skate” program taught by National Certified Coaches(NCCP) following the delivery standards set by Skate Canada.
The YSC’s
CanSkate program is taught in group lesson format by NCCP coaches Lorelei Murphy
and Megan Long, with help from their trained Program Assistants(PA’s). Assessment
of your child’s skating skills is an ongoing process; when a skill is completed, the coach keeps track and when all
the skills for a Stage are completed, the child will be awarded a badge. There are 7 Stages of skill development in the CanSkate
program. Some skills are learned more quickly while other skills will require more practice. Also, each skater will learn
these skills at different rates and, therefore, each skater will earn their badges in their own time. Our goal is to encourage
the skaters to develop their skating skills while allowing them to progress at their own speed. Patience is very important.
Equipment: All CanSkaters require proper fitting skates and
a CSA approved helmet(not a bike helmet). Clothing should be comfortable and should allow the skater to move
freely. Mittens are advised.
Sessions:
The Fall CanSkate sessions are on Thursdays from 5:00-5:45 pm. In order
to get the most from the classes, your skater should be at the rink prepared to go on the ice at 5:00. They should have had
a snack and used the washroom prior to getting on the ice. All classes begin with a warm-up at centre ice before breaking
up into groups according to skating ability.
Cancellations: If a session has to be cancelled for any reason, it will be announced on CJLS and will be posted
on our website, www.yarmouthskatingclub.com . School closures do NOT mean skating is cancelled. Cancellations usually only take place if the arena
closes, which is very rare. If you have provided an e-mail address, we will try to notify you with a mass mail out to all
of our members of any cancellations or updates. Due to the limited number of volunteers, it is not possible to contact everyone
personally by phone.
Volunteers: Our Club is run by volunteers and we
are always looking for additional help, whether it be service as a Board member or a helper for one of our many fundraisers.
If you have some time or some skills that you think may be useful to the Club, please let us know.
Feedback: We welcome your input, both positive and negative, as it gives us
information to improve our skaters programs.
Thank you for joining our CanSkate program and
we look forward to teaching your child to skate, whether it be for hockey, for ringette, for figure skating, for life.
